Tweeting Spiritual Practice: Part I

Rev. Naomi King
Rev. Naomi King

Twitter can be a source of much spiritual grounding and blessing. Those who are encouraged and recalled to our promises and highest values by inspirational quotations will find many wise folks, from classic sources of wisdom to what’s breaking in people’s lives and hearts around the world. Tweeters love news and opinions; I love sampling new blog updates from people I would struggle to find through search engines. But Twitter is also a spiritual community. People utter prayer requests and chant meditations and affirmations, to be picked up and carried by others. Folks respond to each other in crisis with care and compassion. And we share a lot of laughter and inspirational stories. We also create worshipful space out of our disparate days and lives. Remember, the community on Twitter is around the world in real time. Connecting across all that time and distance is part of what Twitter enables; we celebrate that with worshipful tweets.

Unitarian Universalists commonly begin worship lighting a chalice and end worship extinguishing it. The beacon of faith is a way of sharing our light of love and hope. There’s plenty of backstory to tell, available on the UUA website.

Few of the blessings we say in lighting and extinguishing the chalice in face-to-face congregational life fit into the tweetstream. Too wordy. So one day I issued a request and a challenge for 100 character retweetable chalice lightings and extinguishings. I asked for 100 characters because retweeting etiquette requires naming the original party and because I wanted space for the hashtag #chalicelight or #chaliceout (also chosen for limiting character usage). Some of what was offered was longer than 100 characters, but I’m going to list them here, except for the ones covered by international copyright law. Some Tweeters are okay with their names showing & some only gave permission for their Twitter handle to be used. You’ll see.

Many thanks to @TapestryUU @emersonhouston @AndieArthur @mattkinsi @UUKady @UUXMNR @apakula @marlenegeary @donaldtheuugeek @pokemom20 and the many others who made this possible! (Some links to names also below).

Tweeting to create a worshipful time and space isn’t over. Tweet your retweetable chalice lightings and extinguishings  to 100 characters, hashtag them and I’ll swing them into rotation over time. If I don’t RT them reasonably soon, give me a shout out (@revnaomi) with your #chalicelight or #chaliceout

Tweeting Spiritual Practice: Part II

The chalice extinguishing is also important to the spiritual space of Unitarian Universalists. One of the challenges was how to abbreviate “chalice extinguishing” for a hashtag. I decided on #chaliceout – which has been a cause for chuckles and also poking of sci-fi fun. I appreciate that it feels a little like the Church of Trek (cue theremin). If you want to make some other suggestions, go for it.

Tweeting to create a worshipful time and space isn’t over. Tweet your retweetable chalice lightings and extinguishings  to 100 characters, hashtag them and I’ll swing them into rotation over time.
